Burgers and fries and soda, oh my! Our culture loves to eat. Take a drive around town and just look at all the food options that we have available. You may pass 5 McDonalds on your way to work alone and between those are Burger King, KFC, Popeyes, Taco Bell….do I need to go on? When you’re riding down the street you can’t help but notice those big flashy food signs, and if you over look them your kids certainly wont. Just try riding around with a toddler in the back seat, they will make you acknowledge those almighty “Golden Arches.” Now, you could take the “healthier” approach and just go home and cook, but is that really much healthier? I mean, sugar is in just about everything we buy at the grocery store now anyway. Its in our breads, cereals, juice, condiments, tv dinners & prepackaged meals. Not to mention our salad dressings, peanut butter, alcohol…lets face it, almost everything that we consume today has sugar in it. For the majority its not a problem. Not because they don’t care, but because they don’t know. And what you don’t know can’t hurt you, right? Try again. When it comes to the effects of sugar, what you dont know can and will hurt you, and possibly, eventually even kill you.
So lets say that you’re at home and you get this incredible craving for something sweet or something fried or greasy –like fried chicken or pizza, but you don’t feel like cooking. What do you do? Well, lucky for us we can dial a number and have food delivered right to our door. We dont even have to get off the couch, other than to get up and open the door. Its great, isn’t it? I’m sure it would be considered great in a perfect world. But in a world where technology has made it so easy for us to do nothing and still get what we want….its not so great. It’s actually made us lazy. We want to sit on the couch and eat without cooking and nstead of exercising, we watch tv or play video games. Instead of water we drink more juice and soda and instead of fruits and vegetables we snack on cakes, candy and chips. Before you know it, we have have become totally addidcted to everything bad for us and make no time to correct it. As we sit on that couch in front of the TV day after day, doing the same thing and maintaining the same eating habits our waist lines are getting bigger. Our bodies are lacking energy. Our moods are going up and down. Our arteries are clogging up. Our mental clarity is decreasing. Our insulin sensitivity levels are decreasing and blood glucose levels are rising. Sadly, the bad habits that we have get passed on to our children. So they have horrible eating habits, they are stuggling with obesity, they now have high blood pressure, high glucose levels and bouts of depression. Now, those little bad habits have turned into a major problem. This is what I call the Sugar Shocked Effect.
Am I the only one who has noticed that as sugar consumption increased, so has cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity rates? I’m sure that I’m not.
The question from here is, do we continue with the same habits and slowly kill ourselves or do we get off of our butts and do something about it? I personally choose the latter.
